March 2023 Meeting Highlights:
The project for March and April is a composition book cover sized for the "marble" notebook. Changing threads, winding bobbins, and learning the decorative stitches on their machines was the goal. Robyn and Lisa were assisted by Alice M, Suzan G., and Liz F. Seven junior members attended and were busy at their machines for 90 minutes! In April, they'll add the linings, learning to turn the project, press, and hand stitch the opening closed.
Siblings Elizabeth and Stephen are ready to get started!
Lisa S. explains the project while showing the prototype.
Clara and Mia share their comp covers. This was Mia's first time using a sewing machine!
January 2023 Meeting Highlights:
This was an exciting meeting with 9 girls and 2 parents. We met at Joann's in Charlottesville for a field trip. The girls learned about:
- pattern books, finding a pattern, and how to read a pattern for information
- appropriate fabric and notions for beginners
- reading the end of the fabric bolt
- taking fabric to the cutting counter
- using a prepared "map" of Joann's for finding beginner sewing supplies
Lisa managed to get one picture as the group assembled for the tour. We wished we had recorded the interaction of buzz of discussion as the group was very engaged.
We finished up at Tropical Smoothie Cafe - a sweet ending to a sweet morning!
December 2022 Meeting Highlights:
Our plans to party with the Blue Ridge Stitchers went awry due to a Covid outbreak. So leaders Lisa and Robyn pivoted. They prepared different bundles of fabrics and notions that were donated to KST through the year. Blue Ridge Stitchers donated leftover bazaar items. The girls were invited to the Gordon Avenue Library meeting room to "shop". Several members showed up and were allowed a bundle or item from 10-12 groupings along with a make-and-take craft with instruction sheet.
We were so busy meeting and greeting, we forgot photos!
P.S. A big thank you to member Dianne Finnegan for her very generous donation of fabrics, kits, and other items. Also to Lenette Howard for the lace donation.
November 2022 Meeting Highlights:
What a busy day! We had 10 children from ages 8 - 15 (and fortunately), 2 volunteers and 3 parents helping. The leaders Robyn and Lisa had cut and assembled kits of a matching kitchen towel and potholder.
Happily sewng!
Long-term member Claire finished first
New member and beginner Stephen was very pleased with his finished project.
8 year-old Monse's face says it all.

Amelia shares her top she made at home by herself!
Lucian pins his quilt sandwich for his table runner.
Our three visitors were very pleased with their pillow kits.
