Heart Pillows For Mastectomy Patients

Supplies:
• Cotton Fabric (bring to the Community Sew event if you have some you want to use
up. No need to buy any if you don’t.):
o 1/2 yard makes 1-1/2 pillows; 1 Yard makes 3-1/2 pillows.
• Matching or neutral grey sewing thread.
• Scissors and seam ripper
• Pins or sewing clips
• Point turner or stylus to turn the heart point
• Polyester fiber fill. (Bring to the event if you are trying to use up what you own. No
need to go and buy any.)
• Sewing machine if you are able to bring one to the event.

Instructions:
• Print out the top and bottom pattern pieces. Follow the instructions on the pattern
for cutting and taping them together to make half a heart. If desired, print each
piece 2 times and tape together to make a full heart pattern.
• Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out. A half heart can be positioned along the
fabric fold line to make one side. The full heart pattern can be placed below the half
heart to make 2 full sides.
• With right sides together, sew the 2 heart sides using a 1/2” seam. Leave a 3-4 inch
opening along one side for stuffing.
• Clip the curves of the heart before turning to make smooth curves when turned. The
indention where the two pieces meet at the top especially needs to clipped to, but
nor through, the seam line.
• Turn the pillow right side out. Use a point turner to push out the bottom point of the
heart.
• Stuff the heart with polyester fiber fill. Do NOT overstuff the pillow. It should not be
firmly stuffed. It only needs to be moderately stuffed so that you can put it under
your arm and hold it comfortably against your side. I used 3-4 big handfuls of
stuffing in my pillows.
• Turn the edges of the opening to the inside and topstitch them closed with the sewing machine.
